Netanyahu’s West Bank Annexation Plans Threaten Israel’s Future: Fidan
Fidan cautioned that such a step would be detrimental to Israel’s long-term strategic interests.
“If Netanyahu believes the conditions are right, I frankly don’t think he would hesitate. His mindset is maximalist,” he told a Turkish broadcaster. “But this won’t benefit Israel over the next decades.”
The minister condemned Israel’s military operations in Gaza as a “raging frenzy” that has escalated into an international crisis. He observed that most nations, except for a minority, have distanced themselves from Israel amid its nearly two-year conflict in the Gaza Strip.
Highlighting a global realignment, Fidan referenced French President Emmanuel Macron’s endorsement of Palestinian recognition. “Except for US politicians, we don’t see open support for the current Zionist mindset in Israel,” he added.
Addressing ceasefire negotiations, Fidan pinpointed three critical hurdles: control over aid distribution in Gaza, the withdrawal of Israeli ground forces, and guarantees that the ceasefire will hold after Hamas releases hostages.
He stressed that Israel’s strategy extends beyond destruction, aiming to render Gaza uninhabitable through starvation.
“Israeli intelligence officials are traveling country to country, trying to convince them to accept large numbers of Palestinian refugees. This is a project to make Gaza ‘without Palestinians,’” Fidan stated.
Responding to the Israeli parliament’s July 23 vote endorsing West Bank annexation, Fidan asserted that the move fundamentally threatens the viability of a two-state solution.
“You’re trying to destroy something that everyone recognizes based on the 1967 borders. If you don’t accept a negotiated two-state solution now, you open yourself to future risks,” he warned.
